Why do British people always write "xxx" after their names?

X or X means kiss. So XXX or xxx would mean kisses. O or o means hugs so xoxoxo means hugs and kisses.
British people do NOT ALWAYS end their missives with xxx.
I don't know when this trend started but it was certainly more than 80 years ago and was or is still commonplace in Canada, at least among the elderly.
When British people write X after everything, are they being serious or trying not to be awkward?
